Social Enterprise Gets Vertical

March 16, 2017 by heartsofglass

By Russ Stoddard / Mar 16, 2017

Social enterprise is about going up, baby—up, up, up, not down—which is why we’re sharing a story about one of the smartest social enterprises we’ve come across recently, Vertical Harvest, along with a moving documentary that tells its tale.

Vertical Harvest is a new urban farm in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. As its name implies, this greenhouse uses a cool design that, like a plant, moves skyward for three stories as it reaches for the sun and maximizes its footprint on pricey resort real estate to grow and sell produce year-round for the community.

Planet Jackson Hole: An Intimate Crop

January 3, 2017 by heartsofglass

A local film in progress will illuminate the people behind the glass at Vertical Harvest.

By Meg Daly

JACKSON HOLE, WY – How do we nourish community? That is the question explored in a new film in progress, Hearts of Glass, about Vertical Harvest, the urban greenhouse in downtown Jackson that has made people sit up and take notice. Funded in part through a unique public/private partnership with the Town of Jackson, it is one of very few vertical greenhouses in the world.

Vertical Harvest has been written up in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and myriad other publications. It has garnered attention not only for an innovative approach to growing food, but also for co-founders Penny McBride’s and Nona Yehia’s commitment to employing people with developmental disabilities.

Dishing: Hearts of Glass Preview

September 22, 2016 by heartsofglass

Summer is over, but not forgotten. If you missed this year’s Slow Food in the Tetons’ Lockhart Ranch Party, this video will give you a taste of the amazing event. Folks enjoyed a farm-to-table dinner featuring grass fed Lockhart beef, seasonal vegetables from around the valley and beer from Snake River Brewery. Local food was complemented by local art and entertainment (The Canyon Kids and Maddy German).

The following short video was filmed by JenTen Productions, who is currently working on a feature-length documentary about Vertical Harvest’s first year of operation. Slow Food in the Tetons is partnering with JenTen on the project called “Hearts of Glass.”
