For the past several months, Jennifer Tennican / JenTen Productions has been volunteering with a new nonprofit, YES! Access. It’s a story-first, disability-led movement stewarded by co-leaders Meg O’Connell and Tara Cunningham. More than 80 percent of their volunteer team identifies as disabled, neurodivergent, or chronically ill. The YesAccess team comes from across the nation, representing diverse backgrounds and experiences. They believe in the power of story to affect positive change and create a more inclusive future. July is Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. Over 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. live with a disability — that’s more than 70 million people. The first Disability Pride celebration took place in Boston in 1990; the first parade was held in Chicago in 2004. Barriers still exist in health care, employment, public access, and representation — Disability Pride Month is a call to address them. Disability Pride affirms that people with disabilities do not need to be “fixed” — they deserve to be embraced just as they are.

We’re excited to be working with the Growing Hope Project in the San Bernadino City Unified School District. Growing Hope is creating engaging educational experiences and workforce development through food and technology. This year we’re working with employee resource groups, academic institutions and a professional association. 2023’s theme is “Advancing Access and Equity.” Let’s ensure that all people have equal opportunity to contribute their skills and talents! DD Awareness Month 2022

We have a tremendous amount of respect for the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD). The organization has been a champion of Hearts of Glass and its outreach campaign.

Each March, the NACDD and their partners participate in a Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) Campaign.

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.
