Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

DDAM 2024

March 31, 2024 by Jennifer Tennican

Every March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) and its partners collaborate to lead Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM). The annual campaign highlights how people with and without disabilities come together to form strong communities.

NACDD’s 2024 theme, A World of Opportunities, focuses on people working together to remove obstacles to building communities where everyone can do well and succeed. For more information, visit nacdd.org.

Springing Into Action

April 30, 2023 by Jennifer Tennican

We’ve had an exciting couple of months. Here are some highlights during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and Autism and Neurodiversity Acceptance Month.

  • Awarded “Most Impactful Documentary” by the 2023 cohort of Partners in Policymaking Alabama
  • Kicked off programming for the inaugural Broadening Inclusion Grant at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign through an event with the Special Education Graduate Student Association (SEGSA)
  • Participated in Disability Pride Week at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania
  • Collaborated with the Career and Life Studies Certificate (CLCS) Program at the University of Delaware

There is a terrific resource that has information on inclusive post-secondary programs like CLCS. It’s called Think College and it is dedicated to developing, expanding, and improving research and practice in inclusive higher education for students with intellectual disability.

DD Awareness Month 2022

March 31, 2022 by Jennifer Tennican

We have a tremendous amount of respect for the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD). The organization has been a champion of Hearts of Glass and its outreach campaign.

Each March, the NACDD and their partners participate in a Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) Campaign.

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

We took the energy of DDAM into virtual and hybrid events with:

  • St. Norbert College’s Normal Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding
  • Network of the National Library of Medicine’s All of Us Community Engagement Center
  • The Arc of Bartholomew County, Indiana
  • Futures Explored
  • PayPal and their disability-focused employee resource group, Thrive

Stay tuned for more exciting announcements about our work with PayPal.

A Busy, Busy March

March 31, 2021 by Jennifer Tennican

March is always a busy month for us because of the Hearts of Glass programming tie-in with Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Our lineup illustrates the diverse range of entities that we work with. Here’s a quick recap of highlights:

  • Syracuse University – an honor to be a part of a highly interdisciplinary discussion hosted by an academic institution leading the way in disability inclusion.
  • PayPal – amazing synergy between our programming and their corporate commitment to disability inclusion, innovation and accessibility; a joy to work with their disability-focused employee resource group, Thrive.
  • Taft College – programming in honor of the 25th anniversary of their Transition to Independent Living Program.
  • New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Planning Council – free-wheeling, fun and engaging conversation with lots of self-advocates.
  • University of Tennessee Health Science Center – multi-faceted conversation engaging the next generation of health care professionals.
